Rapid Catch-Up Phonics
We are committed to ensuring that every child learns to read through a rigorous and systematic phonics programme. For pupils requiring additional support, the Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up programme offers targeted, accelerated phonics intervention. Designed for older children (Year 2 and above) working below age-related expectations, the programme mirrors the structure of the core Little Wandle approach but is delivered at a faster pace to facilitate rapid progress. Its primary aim is to equip pupils with the phonics knowledge and decoding skills needed to become confident, fluent readers—enabling them to fully access the curriculum and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Assessment
All children are assessed on entry to the Rapid Catch-up programme so their pathway and specific teaching can be created. They are re-assessed when they complete Phases 2, 3 and 4. Children who are following the Phase 5 part of the programme are assessed every four weeks and all children are tested at the end of the programme to check they are ready to leave Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up programme.
The Rapid Catch-up fluency assessment is used to evaluate pupils' reading accuracy and rate as they develop greater confidence in Phase 5. It helps determine whether a child has achieved sufficient fluency and precision to exit the Rapid Catch-up Programme. To effectively comprehend a text, children should typically be reading at a rate of approximately 90 words per minute.
